LEAD YOUR WAY Releases Good Practices Guide on Supported Employment and Digital Skills

The European project LEAD YOUR WAY, co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme and coordinated by DOWN ESPAÑA, has published its Good Practices Guide: Promoting Employability through Supported Employment and Digital Empowerment.

This publication is the result of a comprehensive European research process carried out within the project to identify effective strategies that use technology and digital tools to strengthen supports for people with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities in their pathways to employment.

From research to practice

The Good Practices Guide builds directly on the findings of the LEAD YOUR WAY research conducted across several European countries. Through desk research and expert consultation, the partnership analysed existing initiatives to understand how digital innovation can enhance supported employment, improve job coaching, and increase autonomy at work.

Based on this research, the guide brings together a selection of national and European initiatives that stand out for their:

  • effective use of technology,
  • strong supported employment approach,
  • measurable impact on employability and inclusion, and
  • potential for transfer and replication in other contexts.

What the guide offers

The guide documents a total of 20 good practices that:

  • promote access to ordinary employment in the open labour market,
  • combine supported employment with digital skills development and accessible technologies,
  • provide more effective and personalised support for people with intellectual disabilities,
  • involve employers, professionals, and workers in coordinated inclusion processes.

Each practice is presented in a structured way, highlighting its context, methodology, success factors, and lessons learned.

Digital innovation as a support tool

Many of the initiatives featured in the guide show how technology can be used as a supportive tool, not a barrier. Examples include:

  • digital platforms for task organisation and job coaching,
  • virtual and immersive training environments,
  • accessible tools to support autonomy and decision-making at work,
  • digital resources that improve communication between workers, job coaches, and employers.

These experiences demonstrate that when technology is designed and implemented with accessibility in mind, it can significantly improve the quality and sustainability of supported employment.

A practical resource for organisations and employers

The Good Practices Guide is designed as a practical and inspiring resource for:

  • organisations providing employment support,
  • job coaches and professionals,
  • employers interested in inclusive hiring,
  • policymakers and stakeholders working on employment and social inclusion.

By translating research findings into concrete examples, the guide helps bridge the gap between evidence and practice, contributing to more inclusive labour markets across Europe.
